Allison Payne, a nine-time Emmy Award winner, the face of WGN-TV for two decades dies at the age of 57. Thus, the 21-year veteran of the station left the world on September 11 at her home in Detroit, according to a WGN press release. Besides, she was a mentor to many, ultimately setting a foundation for journalism students. “While so many journalists worry about the list of questions they want to ask, she taught me the most important part of an interview, is the listening. That even if you don’t ask the right questions, if you listen well enough, the story will reveal itself,” said WGN-TV producer Tyra Martin. Allison Payne worked as an intern at NBC affiliate WNWO (channel 24) in Toledo, Ohio at the beginning of her career. During the short period of time, she was promoted to the main anchor of the station’s late evening newscast. Then, she moved to NBC affiliate WNEM-TV (channel 5, now a CBS affiliate) in Saginaw, Michigan where she became the co-anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. In the year 1990, she moved to Chicago where she anchored till 2009 for the station’s primetime 9 p.m. She was paired with Steve Sanders at the anchor desk from 1993 till 2008 in the evening and since 2009 at midday. Allison Payne Health Problems & Death Cause

Allison Payne went on medical leave after suffering from a series of mini-strokes in January and August of 2009. WGN-TV announced that Payne would take an indefinite leave of absence because of ongoing health issues in November 2008. She then sought treatment for depression during her absence months earlier.

She openly confessed in January 2010 saying that she was a recovering alcoholic, after having previously battled alcoholism for 20 years. “Substance abuse can become a problem,” she said at the time. “I wanted to make sure that nothing in my life got out of hand.” Then, she took a leave of absence from WGN-TV to rest her vocal cords in late December 2010. Greg Caputo, news director at WGN-TV, told TimeOut Chicago columnist Robert Feder in an interview that “she was diagnosed a few months ago and tried to tough it out . . . (but) her doctor wants her to stay off the air till they can fix the problem.” On 11th September 2021, Allison Payne dies at 57 at her home.
